SO, it's been a pretty intense quarter with my intro to fashion class. But.. I survived and learned ALOT. alot. So it's all gravy.

For one of the assignments we had to find an illustrator we liked and copy him/her to do some fashion sketches of garments we designed whose inspiration came from a particular time period.

The illustrator I chose is a caricaturist named Matt Zitman.

He did these life drawing sessions and produced some AMAZING amazing amazing drawings that i absolutely fell inloooveeee with. I love his style.

OKAY NOOOOW for my fiiiiiinaaaaaaal
We had design a garment using only white materials (yes i know that there is a non-white material in my garment.) We had to include some paper element and some fabric element. It was suppose to be sculptural and experimental. I, unfortunately, have discovered and been pointed out as to have a hard time breaking away from a particular silhouette..and so, I agree that for this assignment I kind of failed on that part but for what it is I really like it. I'm proud of it. BUT, I struggled alot with my lack of being able to think away and push out of my box, damn. But I did learn how to crochet...and actually crocheted this pretty long piece that i didn't even end up using.. and I experimented with weaving :D woop.

It's made out of : cheese cloth, muslin, garbage bags, tracing paper, 2 kinds of toole, and weeds from tyb.

(caughgabbycaugh) btw.. she's going to try to say that most of that is from me..but just because I bring in all kinds of random things from outside...and because that it is probably all from me... doesn't mean that it is.

I went to a lecture by Michael Knight about.... 10 minutes ago and that is one of the things he said when talking about hand sewing. But I think its a great way to describe your passion in general. Because (like he also drilled in) it takes ALOT of work. ALOT of WORK to get yourself somewhere on your passion. It doesn't just happen over night. YOU have to make it work by PUSHING yourself. Like he, and my current fashion professor say all the time... you can NEVER be satisfied with your work. You have to keep going. Keep driving yourself for better.

Gabby and I were talking about this one day after a lecture we heard by an advertising designer named Kent Middleton who also spoke about the fact of never being comfortable-always drive for more. Gabby is very good with coming up with counter arguments to what I usually find to be great advice.. and these counter arguments are usually really convincing and also good... advice. She basically said, as I remember (correct me if I'm wrong or off) that while always striving to be great and better is a wonderful thing, but to NEVER be satisfied...is a bit horrible. Because if your never satisfied with your work... then.... whats the point..how are you happy. Which makes sense.. because you should be happy with your work.

but I think that what these people mean.. specially in fashion design is that you have to ALWAYS be working towards and coming up with NEW and better ideas. Which, this is something that you, the designer, should thrive on..you should love to do it. Because being satisfied and comfortable with your work can leave you stagnant and standing in stale water. So while your work makes you happy and you can be proud of it.. you should still want to produce better.

The lecture by Kent Middleton was really entertaining and inspiring also. He gave me some great tips on life that I was happy to already be practicing. (OH! and by the way Michael Knight mentioned that his next collections inspiration comes from Dinosaurs and beetles... and I thought that was really ironic because my Mod collection for Intro to fashion was Mod meets Beetles and my Rockabilly collection was (bc it got canceled) going to be Rockabilly meets Dinosaurs. woop)
anyway.

Kent Middleton spoke about how we, as artist and designers, are CONSTANTLY looking for stimuli. (stimulous junkies he called us) We are CONSTANTLY or should constantly be looking and reading and seeing and exploring and discovering new and foreign things. ALWAYS. He mentioned that we should not only listen and watch music and movies that we dislike..but we should emerse ourselves in them, because. we should know about everything because anyyyythhinnnggg can be innssppiiirraaaatiiiiioooonnnnnaaaahhhhh. (inspiration-ah).

along with that, trying new things, he mentioned that we should take different routes places that we usually dont take..etc
(p.s. I can brush my teeth with my left hand!!! yyeaaaahhhhhhh. go jamie. go jamie)

Kent Middleton and Ruben Toledo (I saw his illustrations in an exhibit 2 weeks ago) both share the same basic view of a philospher I learned about in art history last week named Charles Baudelaire, "The artist doesn't need to go back in an earlier time for subject matter or illustration, there is enough heroism in our own world."

Basically.... we have enough in our modern day to create art. We don't have to use what's already been done. We need to look FORWARD for inspiration and stop borrowing from the past. (although.. i mean... its really good to know the past and I dont think its necessarily a bad thing to borrow things..)

but yeah, I like how things are connecting like this. Both Knight and Middleton commented on being paatiieeennnt also. thats improtant. work work work.

annnnd finallyyyyy Kent Middleton spoke of not getting hung up in your own work. If something is a success.. great. move on to something new. Getting caught up and trying to just recreate that sucess will lead to failure..example.. Vanilla Ice. get over it.

On my way from class yesterday? I saw some daylilies..which reminded me of my mom.. :( So I picked some of the dead ones off of the plant because..the dead ones look really awesome dried and flattened. (and I was helping prune the plant. not stealing. tyvm) They were all gooey becuase of the rain. I loved the texture of them.

I mean it's sad, but its really cool.

Beetles.

DUNG BEETLE!...or triceratops?


Me and Patrick went hiking once and saw one of these crossing the trail. He had with him a turd. It was cute. I had it on video..but...vista "updated" (aka crashed my computer) and I lost everything. BUT that dung beetle didn't look like this one..because this one LOOKS LIKE A TRICERATOPS!!!!




I don't think this one is the same kind of beetle as the top two.. but he looks like a triceratops too..so... yeah, here he is. :) I think he might be a type of stag beetle.



hehe.


So, I think he might be my favorite beetle... even though there are about 9340958203948039485 trillion species of beetles. Fun fact: they have the largest number of known species. ...and I don't know all of the beetles out there.. but I mean... this one looks like a dinosaur.

and I found out something else that's pretty interesting:

In the ancient Egypt the "dung beetles", such as this one, used to be adored by the people because they have the "power of creating life from dung and mud". The old Egyptians saw how the dung beetle buried the dung in the soil and few weeks after small beetles were born in the same place, giving the illusion of creating life from dung and mud.

Giraffe Weevil!







They are sexual dimorphic. I just learned that that means that there is a visual difference in form-shape-size-color-presence or absence of parts...etc. between male and female.

yay humans are sexual dimorphic!

but more importantly....so is the giraffe weevil.

The neck of the male weevil is longer than that of the female. hmm.
the neck is an ADAPTATION for nest building.
hmmm i find it interesting that its an adaptation.

That's like what I read about whales.
I had this book once that said that whales came from furry land creatures who ate out of the ocean and eventually they'd venture further and further in..and ..then you get whales.

anyway. when the female weevil is "pregnant" the male will roll up a leaf for the female to lay a SINGLE egg in it. That's sweet. Some human males should probably learn from the giraffe weevil.
